Family Events in Summerland BC
Recreate the evocative sights and sounds of an era, by taking a ride on a restored steam locomotive with the Kettle Valley Steam Railway. Each ninety minute round trip is an adventure that finishes at the Trout Creek Trestle. See incredible lake and valley vistas, enjoy observational games for children, and sing along with our banjo player. Listen to tales of Summerland’s legends and stories. Check the schedule to find out about additional family-fun adventures such as seeing the silhouette of a steam train lit up with sparkling Christmas lights, or the notorious Great Train Robbery & BBQ. We also have special Easter and Mother’s Day train rides.
We appreciate how lucky we are to live in the beautiful Okanagan and invite you to celebrate Earth Week with us each April. This week-long festival of free family events may include the challenge of geocaching, guided tours to dig into the history and geology of Summerland, environmental workshops, or watching a thought-provoking documentary. The whole community comes together for this event and incorporates Earth Week activities into their everyday lives.
We immerse ourselves in the unique, natural diversity of the Okanagan every day, but Summerland goes the extra mile on the May long-weekend during the Meadowlark Nature Festival. Have your family join a dedicated team of prominent naturalists, educators, artists, experienced guides and scientists to take part in a wide range of activities, which might include guided hikes, bird watching, geology and history tours and a whole host of kid friendly, fun and informative events.
During the first weekend of June, Summerland celebrates sports and families in a three day extravaganza. This lively event, centered in Summerland’s Memorial Park, brings the community together to enjoy a parade, live music, vendors, three challenging sporting events and the fun of an outdoor carnival.
Some of us imagine hitting the winding road in a two-seater, open-top sports car, and some of us do it! Even if you don’t own a classic or vintage vehicle you can easily imagine the possibilities as you make your way from one glamorous vehicle to the other when the Endless Summer Show and Shine takes over downtown Summerland during Fall Fair weekend in September.
You know the Christmas season is underway when downtown Summerland officially lights up on the last Friday in November. The Summerland Festival of Lights is an Okanagan tradition attracting thousands of visitors who love to be a part of this bustling experience. The streets are jam-packed with stalls, festival food vendors, street performers, stage entertainment and much more. The night sky lights up too in an incredible explosion of colour and sound when the traditional fireworks display heralds the beginning of the final performance on the main stage.
